Ginny

Sable and White Rough Female

8 years

Available

Ginny is 8 year old sable & white rough coated collie. She is one of the 8 dogs rescued from a Missouri breeder last August. She, like the others, was heartworm positive but has successfully completed all her treatments. Ginny is currently living in a foster home with another collie and numerous cats. Her house manners are impeccable, she's housebroken and crate trained. Once you get her on a leash, she'll walk very nicely by your side.

Although we will never know for sure what her life was like, it appears as if she was primarily a kennel dog, probably coming in the house to have her babies. It appears as if she was abused; I'm sure she was beaten with a leash. Ginny is very apprehensive of anything you carry in your hand, whether it be a leash, a dish of food, or a newspaper. She is also very hesitant about going thru doorways, leading me to believe that someone used to close the door on her, perhaps as way of trying to get her in a door faster. She is used to having food used as "bait" to "trap" her and rarely will take food out of your hand. In fact, she likely won't eat if you're standing close as she fears you will grab her. If you raise your voice, she's gone.

Ginny is still quite timid and it will take some time for her to warm up to people. She is easily frightened and will take to flight, hence a fenced yard is required. If cornered, she'll go belly up. Whether inside or outside, she feels safe being in a "cave" -- like in a crate or under a table in the house or under bushes when she's outside.

While Ginny doesn't appear to have a mean bone in her body, she is very defensive when she first meets other animals. Initially, she is likely to be food aggressive. Once she knows for a fact that the human is in control and that the other dogs will not be aggressive toward her, she will actually pretty much just ignore the other pets in the house. After 3 months, she is only now once in a while expressing more than a passing interest in the other Collie in the house. Other than an occasional sniff, she totally ignores the cats in the house.

Due to spending the majority of her 8 years in a kennel, it seems as if Ginny doesn't know how to play with other dogs or even how to interact with humans. It is painfully obvious that she doesn't know the joy of even being petted.

Ginny is a laid-back, low energy girl who needs a quieter house with a gentle, calm human that is willing to take the time needed to win her trust and teach her what love is all about. A fenced yard and a crate (for the house) is a must.
